There are many wedding photographers out there, but I have always been especially drawn to what comes *after* the wedding–the nitty gritty of trying to make a marriage work in the day to day, especially once kids are added to the mix.
This year I’m excited to be turning my focus even more to marriage and family photography. An integral part of my offerings is my Beloved session. The problem is that these couples sections are hard to define. Not to sound contrived and cliche, but they really must be experienced to be understood. Nonetheless, I can offer a few insights into how I believe they can strengthen marriages.
A few days ago I ran across this article from Psychology Today, “10 Habits of Happy Couples.” It’s worth a read, and I immediately saw some parallels between the “10 Habits” and the techniques I utilize in our Beloved sessions.
5 ways a Beloved session can strengthen your marriage:
1. You and your spouse will be encouraging each other with positive words: words are powerful, but in the daily grind, sometimes our communication with our spouse can diminish to “honey-do” lists and brief rundowns of our day. In a Beloved session, I will lead you through a variety of both serious and light-hearted prompts, all the while focusing on the best of your spouse and what made you fall in love in the first place.
2. Physical touch is encouraged: happier couples touch more…and not just in the bedroom. In our Beloved sessions, you will be touching your spouse, and not in a “pretend you are going to ….” kind of “photo shoot” way. In the Beloved session, I do the work of capturing the photos, but you two get to focus on one another, not on creating a “look” for the camera.
3. You’ll have fun with your spouse in a new environment: trying new things together is one thing that marks a happy couple. During your Beloved session, we’ll have some serious moments, but also lots of lighthearted moments with games and play, too.
4. You will say “I love you” in new ways: your session is interactive, fun, and will be full of opportunities to share your love for one another in new and powerful ways.
5. You will have a special time carved out just for one another: once married, often our real “dates” disappear. Sure, we may catch a movie or eat a meal together, but the meandering chats and dreaming for the future that take place when you are engaged often give way to the pressures of today. A Beloved session is designed to give you a space and time to dream, to reflect, and most of all, to see your spouse again as the person you fell in love with.
